Classic FM star & són unwrap Beethoven’s most important symphony

Hot on the heels of their triumphant, sell-out launch concert in November 2015, són are delighted to announce the next concert in their debut season.

Following Sibelius Unwrapped, the UK’s newest professional orchestra continue their series unwrapping some of the greatest masterworks of classical music with Eroica Unwrapped – featuring one of the most important symphonies ever written. Penned by Beethoven in 1804, it was famously dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, only for this to be vigorously crossed out by Beethoven upon learning of the Emperor’s increasing tyrannical behaviour. Regarded as one of the most significant symphonies, it has towered above orchestral writing over the subsequent 200 years, and remains one of the most important pieces of music ever written.

According to són Artistic Director Robin Browning:

“It really did alter the course of music-history – and for all kinds of reasons: emotionally, structurally, philosophically, harmonically… And it’s every bit as relevant today as in Beethoven’s – and Napoleon’s – time.”

són are particularly looking forward to welcoming John Suchet to join them on stage for Eroica Unwrapped. As a classic FM regular, listened to and admired by thousands, his books filled with invigorating portrayals of the life and times of Beethoven have been bestsellers for years. Robin Browning again:

“John will bring a deft combination of great understanding and lightness of touch to the evening. It offers the són and Turner Sims audience a great chance to hear him live, and to meet him too because there is a book-signing in the concert’s interval. And, of course, back on stage after the break, són will perform the whole symphony uninterrupted – powerful, dramatic and earth-shattering: remarkable music indeed.”
