Want to ZOOOOM to the musical stars?
Want to play in a FULL orchestra for the very first time?

In conjunction with . . .

launching SUPERSÓNIC
Southampton’s newest orchestral summer school

Presented by són – in collaboration with Southampton Music Hub and the University of Southampton – supersónic is a fun-filled, three day musical workshop and orchestral summer school, blasting off in July 2016.

If you play an orchestral instrument –  strings, woodwind, brass or percussion – then supersónic is for you! Whether you play clarinet or cowbell, violin or viola, trumpet or timpani – supersónic offers young musicians their first experience playing in a FULL ORCHESTRA.

Specifically designed for instrumentalists of grade 2 to 5 standard, the music will be centered around famous classical pieces, including well-known film tunes, and other enthralling repertoire – some of which has even been written specially. All of it has been adapted and recomposed for growing fingers and developing lips. Plus, you’ll be helped on every step of the journey by expert musicians, always on hand to guide you through the musical sky.

Jump on board as Southampton’s first supersónic orchestra lifts off, and be inspired by some of són‘s top musicians – including our conductor – as well as skilled Southampton Music Hub teachers and gifted performers from the University of Southampton. You can be sure of an amazingly fun time, full of rich musical training all through the three days, guaranteed to inspire you for years to come.

When is it happening?

Dates: Thu 21 – Sat 23 July 2016
That’s right at the start of the summer holidays!
Times: each day will run 9.30am until 4pm, with an informal final concert at 3pm on the Saturday.

And where?

It’s all taking place at Woodlands Community College, Harefield, Southampton. We’ve added a map below…

Sounds great! What Music will we play?

Some of the greatest hits of orchestral music, including film themes and highlights from the BBC Ten Pieces – such as Beethoven’s 5th symphony, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Holst’s Planets. All of it has been specially arranged to allow younger hands and mouths to bow and blow with skill, whilst learning and growing all the time.

Lovely! Who’s doing it?

All young musicians will be coached, conducted and guided by some of the country’s top professionals every day. Not only will the són conductor direct many of the sessions, but specialist visiting artists will run large and small sectionals – inspiring all with their skill and experience.

not JUST an orchestra…

Anything else? What about extra bits?

We’re planning plenty of supplementary activities for all the young musicians, including:
• Samba drumming workshops
• Improvisation sessions
• Introductory chamber music sessions
• Large, informal choir workshop

Is there a concert? I want to show off my new orchestra!

Of COURSE! We’ve got a special final concert lined-up to show everyone exactly what you’ve been up to over the preceding three days. Think of it as Southampton’s mini Orchestral X-factor (just without any judges!) – your chance to shine in your new orchestra, sharing the stage with new musical friends.
